Know the Dangers of Petrolatum

Petrolatum or commonly known as “petroleum jelly” is an all-around product, be it as a lubricant or to cure skin concerns. Every household never runs out of petrolatum because of its critically acclaimed benefits. It can be incorporated into personal care products or baby products whenever needed.

However, various studies have proven that petrolatum is not all about the good stuff; there are health risks and side effects that come along with it. Before you dive into the hype, you must be aware of the downsides of using petrolatum or petroleum jelly.

The Downsides of Using Petrolatum

  • Increases the risk of serious infection

Petrolatum may be used to protect minor cuts and scrapes. However, it is not advisable to be used for deep wounds as it forms a barrier at the skin surface. Doing so might cause serious infection.

  • May cause lipoid pneumonia

Accidental inhalation of petrolatum might cause lipoid pneumonia which can be life-threatening. A study described a patient who used petrolatum intranasally for a long time. Pathologic findings showed that it resulted in lipoid pneumonia.

  • Causes rare skin reaction

Petrolatum doesn’t usually trigger skin reactions but petrolatum-based ointments may do so. According to research, a petrolatum-based antibiotic ointment may cause skin allergies. The best way to avoid such a scenario is to use petrolatum free personal care products.

  • Contains Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Petrolatum contains Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are harmful chemicals that are composed of organic rings. Long term health risks of PAHs include cataracts, kidney and liver damage, and jaundice.

It is always better to play safe than to suffer the consequences. Avoid applying petrolatum around the nasal area. Furthermore, avoid using petrolatum-based personal care products and baby products. It is highly recommended to use effective and safe products that render the same, if not better moisturizing effect as petrolatum.
