Gorgeous Mom’s Skin Care

Gorgeous Mom’s Skin Care

There are studies that show up to 60% of what is applied to the skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream (Fairley, 2001). During pregnancy, skin care products mothers use can potentially reach the fetus. With these new understandings of how the skin functions, it is important that pregnant mothers take extra precaution in avoiding ingredients that may cause irritation and potential harm to their body.

Skin care ingredients to avoid:

Several chemicals which are used in common, popular skin care products are known irritants and potential carcinogens. Avoiding these substances serve to decrease overall exposure to long term harmful effects.

•    Artificial Colors – FD&C, derived from coal tar. Artificial colors can cause headaches, irritation to children and people with sensitive skin, and have been a suspected carcinogen.

•    DEA, MEA, TEA. These are groups of synthetic fatty acids used for thickening, emulsifying, foam boasting, foam stabilizing, and other super fatting properties. These hormone disrupting chemicals are suspected to be cancer-causing nitrates and nitrosamines. They are already banned in Europe due to known carcinogen effects.

•    Dimethicone. Silicone product (mineral oil based) that can clog pores and cause allergic reactions. This synthetic product is what gives lotions and creams an ultra smooth feel.

•    Fragrances. Fragrances may affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, irritability, inability to cope, and other behavioral changes.

•    Mineral Oil. It is a petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic, clogging the pores. It interferes with the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Premature aging can result due to slowing down of skin function and cell development.

•    Parabens. A petroleum by-product used in most cosmetics as a preservative. They have been shown to negatively mimic estrogen and have been found in breast tumors. Parabens are also serious allergens and irritants.

•    Petrolatum. Petrolatum is mineral oil jelly. It is commonly used in cosmetics because it is very inexpensive.

•    Propylene Glycol. Also known as “anti-freeze”, it is used as a humectant to retain moisture and prevent things from drying out. It has been shown to cause brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.

•    Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. These detergents and surfactants are suspected carcinogens (contains trace amounts of formaldehyde) and have been shown to cause irritation to eyes, skin and lungs.
Ingredients that are beneficial for mothers and while pregnant:
Shea Butter. Its high content of unique fatty acids gives it the ability to moisturize and retain the elasticity of skin. It is the ideal treatment for dry or aging skin as it repairs cell degeneration.

•    Jojoba Butter. This rich, emollient butter is highly penetrating as it closely resembles the natural sebum of our own skin. It contains a natural anti-inflammatory called myristic acid, useful for various skin conditions.

•    Evening Primrose. An exceptionally nourishing oil due to the high essential fatty acid GLA (Gamma-Lineolic Acid), a nutrient the body does not produce. One of the key benefits is its ability to provide relief for inflammatory skin conditions. It helps promote healthy skin by nurturing the cell membranes and supporting their fluidity.

•    Calendula. It is most recognized for its ability to heal wounds and abrasions. This botanical extract has anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, antibacterial properties to help soothe skin.

•    Cucumber Extract. The juice from cucumber has both strong moisturizing abilities as well as mild astringent effects. Cucumber extract is soothing and helps relieve puffiness by tightening skin. It revitalizes tired and stress skin, leaving it calm, cool and radiant.

•    Aloe Leaf Extract. This soothing and cooling extract is used to heal and treat inflammation, burns, eczema, and other skin conditions. It contains 12 vitamins (including vitamins A, B1, B6, B12, C, and E), 19 amino acids, and over 20 minerals.

•    Macadamia Seed Oil. The high content of palmitoleic acid makes this oil an effect antioxidant particularly good for exposed, dry skin. It penetrates and hydrates the skin quickly while protecting just like human sebum does.

•    Horesetail Extract. This plant extract containing natural bio-minerals (manganese, magnesium, iron, and copper) is used for its excellent diuretic, astringent, and healing properties. It also assists in boosting circulation and rejuvenating connective tissues.

•    Oats. Its water-binding properties act as a moisturizer and the oats’ soothing agents help reduce redness and itching. Minor skin irritations can be relieved with oat treatments.

•    Cocoa Butter. Cocoa butter is an antioxidant-rich, soothing emollient used to heal and moisturize skin. It helps reduce the formation of stretch marks by keeping the skin supple.

•    Vitamin E. A powerful antioxidant that protects skin from free radical damage and increases the growth of new skin cells.

•    Lavender. The essential oil of lavender has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that are used to treat wounds and other skin ailments.

•    Allantoin. This anti-inflammatory extract derived from comfrey root accelerates wound healing and stimulates skin cell growth. A keratolytic agent (encourages the removal of dead skin cells and softens the tissue) that is used to soothe the skin and to promote healing in minor skin irritations.
